Widnes Vikings denied rare away triumph at the death by Warrington Wolves

Warrington Wolves claim a dramatic 22-20 Super League victory over Warrington Wolves courtesy of Joel Monaghan's try in the dying seconds.

Joel Monaghan's last-gasp try has denied Widnes Vikings their first away points of the Super League season as Warrington Wolves claimed a 22-20 victory at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Gene Ormsby crossed over for the contest's first try, making the most of some space out wide to get the ball rolling for the home side.

It was all square 10 minutes later as Jack Owens ducked through, although, like Stefan Ratchford before him, Owens failed to add the extras with the boot.

A rally from the Wire saw them build up a hefty advantage prior to the interval as Monaghan and Daryl Clark both crossed over within three minutes of each other to create some breathing space.

Paddy Flynn managed to find the chalk right on the hooter to keep his side in the contest, however, and then Kevin Brown - a man picked out for special treatment from the hosts - added a special individual try soon after the restart.

A successful conversion ensured that the scores were tied with 47 minutes on the clock, but Brown charged 60 metres up field to add his second and turn the game on its head.

Monaghan saw a try ruled out for offside as a Warrington side who have struggled to win back-to-back games this term turned the screw, and they were given a real lifeline when Ben Westwood crossed over in the corner.

The follow-up kick was missed by Declan Patton, while Owens had a try of his own ruled out due to a forward pass in the build-up, yet Monaghan added the contest's ninth try with the last play of the game to snatch victory for Tony Smith's men.

Wolves are now fourth in the league table, while the Chemics are down in 11th place.
