Adam Johnson found guilty of one child sex charge, not guilty of the other

Johnson found guilty of one child sex charge

Former Sunderland footballer Adam Johnson has been found guilty of one count of sexual activity with a child.

The 28-year-old denied two charges of sexual activity with a child and was earlier found not guilty of having oral sex performed on him by a 15-year-old, but the jury at Bradford Crown Court could not reach a unanimous decision on the second charge.

The judge therefore accepted a majority verdict of 10-2 that Johnson was guilty of penetrating the schoolgirl with his fingers.

Johnson had previously pleaded guilty to one other count of sexual activity with a child and a further charge of grooming.

Sentencing is expected to occur in the next two to three weeks, with the judge today saying that a custodial sentence is an "almost inevitable outcome".

The judge said in his closing remarks today that Johnson is facing up to ten years in prison with a starting point of five years.

Johnson's counsel Orlando Pownall QC told the court today that he is to appeal the guilty verdict on one count of child sex activity.
