Leicester City defender Danny Simpson has escaped a prison term after he assaulted his ex-girlfriend during an alleged drunken row in December last year.
The 28-year-old was ordered by Manchester Magistrates' Court to carry out 300 hours of unpaid work.
The former Newcastle United player was found by police on December 29 'straddling' ex-partner Stephanie Ward with both of his hands wrapped around her throat.
Ms Ward, who called 999 on the night of the incident, released a statement defending the footballer, who is the father of her daughter Skye, after he was found guilty of assault.
After District Judge Alan Jones was told in court that Ms Ward had opted to drop a planned restraining order against Simpson, it was ruled that the Foxes player would carry out community service, as well as pay £900 prosecution costs and a £60 victim surcharge, according to the Manchester Evening News.
Leicester's club chaplain and Simpson's agent were present in court for the sentencing.
