Everton FC to open new free school

A school that will be run by Everton Football Club will open on Merseyside later this month.

The Everton in the Community Free School is one of 55 new education centres that will be opened across the country.

Eight prestigious private schools are setting up the London Academy of Excellence in Newham, while a specialist music primary school in Bradford will also open its doors.

The first 24 of these free schools opened 12 months ago and ministers are expected to announce that another 114 will open in 2013 and beyond.

Education Secretary Michael Gove said: "Every child should have the choice to go to an excellent school.

"These new schools have been set up by idealistic people who are determined to give parents the kind of choice only the rich can currently afford."

The schools can be set up by parents and local communities who want to have greater freedom over what children are taught.
