Ex-Chelsea academy player dies after getting hit by a taxi

Former Chelsea academy player Joe Reay has died after getting hit by a taxi on Saturday.

The 20-year-old, who played alongside British sprinter Adam Gemili at Chelsea, was hit by the vehicle in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Reports have claimed that Reay was leaving a sportsman's dinner at Woking Football Club where retired boxer Frank Bruno was a guest speaker.

The young footballer joined Chelsea as a schoolboy before moving on to Woking, where his father Kelvin Reay is a director.

"Joe would have turned 21 this month and his dad planned to send him and his mates to Vegas - it is just terrible," the London Evening Standard quotes Woking director Peter Jordan as saying.

"He had a good evening with Frank Bruno on the Friday and was full of beans and happy. He was certainly a very good player. I spent two hours with his family on Saturday as Kelvin is a director and a good friend. The family is devastated, the whole club is devastated."

The sportsman was due to watch Chelsea play on the day that he was killed.
