The centre-back, who scored once in 54 appearances for the Romanian national team between 1993 and 2001, famously represented Atletico Madrid between 1997 and 1998, before joining Scottish side Rangers.

"It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we report the passing of our ex-squad member, Daniel Prodan, at 44. Condolences to his family," read a statement from Prodan's former club Atletico.
