Martin Kaymer retains strong US Open lead

Martin Kaymer leads by five shots going into the final round of the 2014 US Open.

Martin Kaymer will take a five-stroke lead going into the final round of the US Open, despite carding a two-over-par 72 on day three at Pinehurst.

The former world number one began on 10-under, but dropped a shot at the second to get his round off to the worst possible start.

Kaymer then bogeyed the fourth and sixth holes, but birdied the fifth to keep his sizeable lead intact.

However, when the German gave away strokes at 13 and 15, Kaymer may have been forgiven for thinking his quest for a major championship was unravelling before his eyes.

The 29-year-old composed himself to birdie the last and finish the day on eight-under, five clear of the chasing pack, which includes Ryder Cup player Rickie Fowler.
