Webb Simpson withdraws from Open Championship

Simpson pulls out of Open

US Open champion Webb Simpson has officially dropped out of this week's Open Championship due to the impending birth of his child.

The 26-year-old will be absent from the Royal Lytham field with his wife expected to give birth in two weeks' time.

Simpson, who has now become the second US Open champion in five years to miss the tournament, hinted last month that he was likely to be absent from the Open.

Australian professional Jason Day announced his withdrawal earlier this week after his wife gave birth to their new child.
