Donald happy with Open first round

World number one Luke Donald has revealed that he is happy with his "workmanlike" opening round of 70 at the Open Championship.

The Englishman putted a birdie on the third at Royal Lytham & St Annes before dropping a shot on the last hole of the day to end on level par.

The 34-year-old believes that he can mount an attack at the top of the leaderboard if he starts sinking a few more birdies.

"I think mentally I was in a good place. I felt like I wasn't getting too much ahead of myself," he said.

"I hit a lot of very solid shots but I didn't get as much out of it as I would have liked. But really it was kind of an easy 70. It wasn't one where I was getting up and down and really struggling.

"It was very workmanlike. If I continue to do that I know the putts will start to drop and I can make a few birdies."

Australian Adam Scott currently leads the field by one shot on six-under-par.
