Victory at the Suzuka track in Japan will see Vettel gain an unassailable advantage over second-place Alonso, if the Spaniard was to finish eighth or lower.

produced a superb drive in his Sauber to finish just outside of the podium places, with Niko Hulkenberg separating him and Alonso in fifth. Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg were once again further back than they would have liked in seventh and eight respectively, while Jenson Button and Felipe Massa were also among the points.
