McLaren admit interest in Alonso

McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh has admitted that he would welcome Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso to the team.

Questions over the Spaniard's future with the Italian Formula 1 outfit arose when Kimi Raikkonen was confirmed as his teammate for next season following Felipe Massa's departure.

When Whitmarsh was asked by BBC Sport if he wanted Alonso, the team principal said: "Yes, any team would. He's the best driver. I don't know his contractual situation. I assume he's under contract."

The double world champion drove for McLaren in 2007.
