Ex-Haas boss Steiner takes charge of MotoGP team

Guenther Steiner has re-emerged in top-level motorsport, sealing a move into MotoGP rather than returning to Formula 1.

It was confirmed at MotoGP's Catalan GP that Steiner, 60, together with business partner Richard Coleman, will purchase Tech3 and its Moto3 arm in a deal effective from 2026.

Steiner will serve as CEO while Coleman steps in as team principal. Long-time boss Herve Poncharal, who founded Tech3 in 1990 and guided the squad into MotoGP in 2001, will lead the team through the current campaign before shifting into a consultant role.

The operation will remain based in Bormes-les-Mimosas, France, and continue to run KTM machinery. “This is a fantastic opportunity,” Steiner said. “Tech3 is a great team with a huge amount of potential and an impressive legacy.

"We’re excited to become part of the MotoGP paddock and maximise the potential of the team and the sport as it continues to grow, helping to bring it to new audiences.”

The Italian is best known for leading Haas in Formula 1, where his outspoken style became a central feature of Netflix’s Drive to Survive. His entry into MotoGP follows Liberty Media’s own acquisition of series promoter Dorna, adding to the crossover between the two championships.

Poncharal said handing over the reins felt like the right timing. “When Guenther approached me with an interest in the team, it seemed to fall into place as the perfect moment to make this change. Tech3 will be in good hands.”

MotoGP sporting chief Carlos Ezpeleta also praised the deal, calling it a “great moment” for the championship as it seeks to accelerate its global expansion.
