Hamilton's Mercedes continued to show impressive pace as it clocked a time of 1:20.558, a full second quicker than Adrian Sutil in the Force India.
Felipe Massa was another tenth behind Sutil in the Ferrari, with Pastor Maldonando coming fourth before lunch for Williams.
The majority of the field will be back in action this afternoon, minus Kimi Raikkonen who is absent through illness.
Maldonando will also take a break from the afternoon session, with Valtteri Bottas standing in for Williams.
