Wiesbaden vs Bayern - prediction, team news, lineups

Bayern Munich will be looking to continue their dominant start to the new season when they take on Wehen Wiesbaden in the first round of the DFB-Pokal on Wednesday.

For the third-tier side, this is a rare opportunity to test themselves against world-class opposition. For Bayern, this is just another hurdle in their pursuit of silverware.

Match preview

Wehen fans must feel like they have been taken on a rollercoaster ride in these first weeks of the season, courtesy of their team’s results.

The Wiesbaden outfit kicked off the new season with an encouraging 3-1 victory over SSV Ulm, but that was as good as it got.

A week later, Wehen travelled to Verl and took a 2-0 lead inside the opening 20 minutes. The team ended up squandering their early advantage, drawing 2-2 at the Sportclub Arena.

The rollercoaster took another wild turn last weekend, with Wehen losing a 4-3 thriller with Rot Weiss Essen – a game which saw them concede a deciding 94th-minute goal.

If all of that was not enough, Wehen are now preparing for their toughest test in years as they welcome the defending Bundesliga champions to the BRITA-Arena.

Speaking of the Bavarians, Vincent Kompany will be determined to end the club’s five-year wait for DFB-Pokal success.

Having won this competition 20 times – more than any other club – you would think the desire to win it again wanes. However, with Bayern failing to get their hands on the trophy for five long seasons, winning the cup would certainly feel meaningful this time around.

Bayern are fully expected to cruise into the second round of the competition, not only due to the gulf in quality between both squads but also due to recent form.

Kompany’s men have made a terrific start to the season, first claiming the Super Cup against Stuttgart before dismantling RB Leipzig 6-0 in their season opener.

While the Bavarians are expected to make changes, anything other than a comfortable win will be seen as disappointing.

Team News

Wehen, who are currently managed by their former player Nils Doring, have enjoyed a good summer in terms of recruitment.

The club have been able to attract a host of new players, with most of them already featuring this season.

Jordy Gillekens, for instance, grabbed one of the goals against Essen last week. The likes of Lukas Schleimer, Niklas May and Miland Nejad also featured, and barring any last-minute injuries, they are expected to be involved again on Wednesday.

Bayern, on the other hand, are not quite done in the transfer market as they continue to chase possible signings.

With just 22 fit first-team players, there is not a lot of room for rotation in games like the one on Wednesday.

Jamal Musiala remains on the sidelines with a long-term injury, as does Alphonso Davies. Tom Bischof has also joined the injury list due to an emergency appendectomy.

Wehen Wiesbaden possible starting lineup: Stritzel; May, Janitzek, Gillekens, Wohlers; Johansson, Nejad, Gozusirin, Schleimer; Kaya, Flotho

Bayern Munich possible starting lineup: Ulreich; Guerreiro, Min-jae, Upamecano, Boey; Kimmich, Pavlovic; Díaz, Olise, Karl; Kane

We say: Wehen Wiesbaden 0-5 Bayern Munich

To their credit, Wehen have impressed by scoring eight goals in their first three games. Then again, conceding seven across those same matches is not ideal.

Bayern are expected to walk straight through their opponents without getting out of second gear. With that in mind, we are backing the visitors to score five goals in a five-star performance.
