Match Analysis: Watford 0-0 West Bromwich Albion

Watford and West Bromwich Albion have played out a goalless draw in their Premier League clash this afternoon.

The Hornets dominated the match and had a number of shots on goal, but they were unable to seriously trouble Boaz Myhill.

Despite being outplayed, the visitors almost won the game late on, but Saido Berahino could only place his header wide of the post from just a few yards out.

Here, Sports Mole takes a closer look at the events that unfolded at Vicarage Road.

Was the result fair?

Watford were by far the better team this afternoon and deserved to pick up the three points. They saw all of the ball and dominated from the kick off. West Brom just couldn't handle the pace of their opponents' attacking players and they didn't help themselves by giving the ball away far too cheaply in the midfield.

However, for all of Watford's positive build-up play and attacking intent, they struggled to create clear-cut chances throughout the match. It was actually the Baggies who should have stole the points at the end, but Berahino somehow headed wide, after being picked out unmarked at the back post.

Watford's performance

There was plenty to admire from the Hornets and they made a great start to the afternoon by constantly putting their opponents under huge pressure and never allowing them time on the ball. Troy Deeney and Odion Ighalo were a constant menace for the West Brom defence and the two strikers linked up brilliantly all afternoon.

Jurado also caught the eye in the midfield, but for all of their possession, they very rarely got in behind the defence. When they did, they found Myhill in good form to keep out their attempts. Quique Flores will be pleased that his team have now picked up two points from their opening two games, but he will certainly look for them to be more clinical in their next outing.

West Brom's performance

The Baggies were poor in their opening-day defeat to Manchester City and they showed little improvement at Vicarage Road. They were caught out in possession far too often and their build up was laboured all afternoon. Berahino and Rickie Lambert were left stranded for most of the game, while their wide players barely troubled the full backs.

They only managed six attempts on goal and none of those found the target, although Berahino really should have found the net late on. It was another display that will worry Tony Pulis and the manager may seriously be considering making further changes to his playing squad before the end of the month.

Sports Mole's man of the match

Etienne Capoue:

The French midfielder struggled to nail down a regular starting spot during his two years at Tottenham Hotspur, but he has made a very impressive opening to his Watford career. He was a rock in the heart of the midfield and he already seems to have struck up a fine understanding with fellow summer signing Valon Behrami.

Biggest gaffe

This must go to Berahino for his huge miss in the closing stages. He was found at the back post by Gareth McAuley, but from just a couple of yards out, he diverted the ball wide. The striker was under no pressure at all and a player of his quality really should have finished from that sort of position.

Referee performance

There can be no complaints from either side about Paul Tierney's performance in the middle today. The referee did not get a decision wrong and allowed the game to flow. He was also quick to deny West Brom a penalty, when Berahino appeared to dive over Heurelho Gomes inside the box.

Watford:

The Hornets will return to action next Sunday with another home clash against Southampton.

West Brom:

The Baggies have a tricky looking fixture against Premier League champions Chelsea next Sunday.
