Edinson Cavani handed Uruguay ban for Copa America red card

CONMEBOL ban Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani for two World Cup qualifiers for his part in a confrontation with Chile's Gonzalo Jara at the Copa America.

Uruguay forward Edinson Cavani has been banned for his country's next two World Cup qualifiers for his part in an altercation with Chile's Gonzalo Jara in the Copa America last month.

Paris Saint-Germain's Cavani, who has been linked with a move to Manchester United this summer, was shown a second yellow card during the quarter-final for shoving his hand into Jara's face.

Video evidence later showed that Jara had poked his finger up Cavani's backside and that resulted in him missing the remainder of the tournament as Chile, the hosts, went on to win their first major tournament by beating Argentina in the final.

In the hot-tempered quarter-final, Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez was also sent to the stands and both he and his assistant Mario Rebollo have been handed three-match touchline bans by CONMEBOL.

Cavani will have to sit out the World Cup qualifiers against Bolivia and Colombia on October 8 and 12, with Tabarez and Rebello also not on the touchline for November's match against Ecuador.
