Sunderland appoint Steve Staunton as scout

Former Republic of Ireland manager Steve Staunton has been handed a scouting role by Sunderland.

The 42-year-old will scout upcoming opponents for Black Cats manager Steve Bruce.

"We are looking to Steve to bring a high level of expertise based on his experience," said Bruce.

"He joins a very experienced backroom team here at Sunderland."

Staunton made 102 appearances for the Republic of Ireland.
