Spurs started on the front foot, with Nacer Chadli and Christian Eriksen having early warning shots before they had a stroke of luck.

Forward Emmanuel Adebayor appeared to catch Ryan Shawcross with a stray elbow but got away with just a talking-to from Andre Marriner.

Stoke grew into the game after the 10-minute mark and were so close to the opening goal after 25 minutes when Stephen Ireland's shot whistled just past the post.

Soon after Spurs were in front when Adebayor tiptoed into the area and clipped a cross to the back post where Danny Rose got in front of his man to power a header into the net.
