Artur Boruc accuses Southampton fans of racial abuse

Boruc: 'Southampton fans shouted racial slurs'

Southampton goalkeeper Artur Boruc has revealed that racial abuse from supporters prompted him to throw a water bottle into the home crowd.

The shot-stopper launched a bottle towards a section of fans back in October, which led to his demotion to the bench under then-manager Nigel Adkins.

"I won't say I regret [throwing the bottle] because I heard insults from the stands. Racist ones," Boruc told Polish newspaper Republic.

"I blamed myself for it because I gave Adkins the reason that he could sit me on the bench. I was thinking I'd get ready quickly but I had to come to terms with a different role."

Boruc moved to St Mary's from Fiorentina on a free transfer in September.
