Ryan Bertrand praises Ronald Koeman impact

Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand admits that he has been able to "flourish" under manager Ronald Koeman.

Ryan Bertrand has said that playing for Ronald Koeman has helped him "flourish" since moving to Southampton.

The defender joined the Saints on loan from Chelsea last summer before making the switch to St Mary's Stadium permanent in January's transfer window.

The 25-year-old, who was named in England's starting lineup for the first time for today's friendly against the Republic of Ireland, told the club's website: "When I left Chelsea to join Southampton I wasn't too stressed about the pressure of getting back into the England fold.

"It was all about getting that consistency and getting that playing time. It was important to be doing that one step at a time. At a fantastic club like Southampton and under the management of Ronald Koeman a lot of us have managed to flourish in a short space of time.

"He has a wealth of experience that he puts across, but not in a demanding way. It's more in a self-confidence way. He'll give you advice here and there and really encourage you to do more. It's not acceptable just to do enough."

Bertrand made 39 appearances in all competitions for Southampton last season.
