Preview: Sheffield Wednesday vs Swansea City - prediction, team news, lineups

Sheff Weds vs Swansea - prediction, team news, lineups

Sheffield Wednesday will continue the search for their first Championship win of the season when they take on Swansea City at Hillsborough Stadium on Saturday.

The hosts have drawn one and lost two of their first three league fixtures, while the visitors have won one, drawn one and lost one of their three games.

Match preview

Sheffield Wednesday came into the 2025-26 season having endured a miserable summer, including the club being handed a three-window transfer fee ban by the EFL after repeated breaches of regulations, while manager Danny Rohl also left the club.

The German was quickly replaced by coach Henrik Pedersen, and the new manager has done an admirable job in the opening games of the campaign considering his side have signed just one player this summer and lost several key first-team players.

Sheffield Wednesday were narrowly defeated 2-1 by Leicester City on the opening day - conceding an 87th-minute winner to Wout Faes - followed by a 3-0 loss to Stoke City, before finally getting their first point on the board with a superb draw against Wrexham, which saw the Owls come from 2-0 down to take a point.

The Owls may remain winless in the league, but they have advanced in the EFL Cup with consecutive penalty shootout triumphs over Bolton Wanderers and Leeds United, though both games ended level after normal time, leaving them still without a victory inside 90 minutes this season.

Hoping to build on the most recent penalty win over Premier League Leeds, Sheffield Wednesday will be hoping to secure their first three points of the Championship campaign against Swansea.

Swansea are certainly the favourites heading into Saturday's clash, though, as the Swans have enjoyed a strong start to the season across all competitions.

Alan Sheehan's side narrowly lost 1-0 on the opening day to Middlesbrough but have immediately responded with one win and one draw in the league, while they have also progressed to the third round of the EFL Cup.

Swansea defeated Crawley Town 3-1 and Plymouth Argyle on penalties in the cup, while they have also recorded a 1-0 win over Sheffield United and drew 1-1 with Watford in the Championship.

That leaves the Swans undefeated in their last four games, and combined with an impressive record of one loss, three wins and four draws in the last eight meetings with the Owls, Swansea will certainly be confident of securing a victory.

Team News

Sheffield Wednesday are anticipated to be without Di'Shon Bernard, Bruno Fernandes, Nathaniel Chalobah, Pierce Charles and Gabriel Otegbayo for Saturday's match due to ongoing injury issues.

New signing Ethan Horvath was a standout performer as the Owls progressed past Leeds in the EFL Cup, including making two penalty saves, and the keeper is expected to be their number one for the season.

Pedersen made wholesale changes to the team that started in the cup against Leeds, and none of the outfield players who started are expected to start against Swansea.

As for Swansea, Filip Lissah and Ricardo Santos will miss out through injury, while Kaelan Casey and Ji-sung Eom may not start after coming off with injury worries last time out.

Zan Vipotnik is expected to start for the Swans after netting in each of the last two games, while Ronald should also feature in attack after also netting two goals already this term.

Sheffield Wednesday possible starting lineup:

Horvath; Valery, Iorfa, Lowe; Palmer, Ingelsson, Bannan, Kobacki; McNeill; Cadamarteri, Ugbo

Swansea City possible starting lineup:

Vigouroux; Key, Cabango, Burgess, Tymon; Franco, Galbraith; Ronald, Yalcouye, Eom; Vipotnik

We say: Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 Swansea City

Sheffield Wednesday will be riding a high coming into Saturday's match after eliminating Leeds in the EFL Cup, and with Swansea having lost all of their last four away games, we believe the hosts will scrape a narrow victory.
