The home side came close as Jacques Maghoma forced Scott Carson to push his powerful effort wide.

Midway through the half, Wigan took the lead as McClean slotted home from inside the box.

Powell wasted a great chance to double their advantage, but after being played through by James Perch, he fired the ball straight at the keeper.
