Midfielder Maxime Gonalons says that Roma are capable of causing a surprise when they meet Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-finals.

Midfielder Maxime Gonalons has claimed that Roma are full of confidence after reaching the Champions League quarter-finals.

Roma have been placed in a last-eight tie with tournament favourites Barcelona, and the Serie A side are underdogs to progress any further in the competition.

However, Gonalons has said that he and his teammates believe that they can cause a surprise, having previously topped a group which included Chelsea and Atletico Madrid.

The 29-year-old told the Champions League Magazine: "We went through the first round despite the difficult group, it was called a group of death. We finished first. That gave us confidence and allowed us to eliminate Shakhtar Donetsk.

"Barcelona? They're a great team, I think they've had the best player in the world for several years (Lionel Messi). It's always hard when you face such good players. We have a chance though and we'll give our best. In football you never know what can happen."

Gonalons has been restricted to just 13 appearances for Roma during the current campaign.
