Team News: Jonathan Walters starts for Republic of Ireland in Euro 2016 opener against Sweden

Walters starts for Rep Ireland opener

Jonathan Walters has been named in the Republic of Ireland's starting XI for their opening Group E game against Sweden at Euro 2016 in Saint-Denis.

The Stoke City forward was a doubt for the match after only returning to full training on Saturday following an Achilles injury.

However, he has won his fitness race and is included in manager Martin O'Neill's first XI, which also includes James McCarthy, who had been struggling with a hamstring injury.

Robbie Keane fails to make the lineup due to his recent calf problem, but is included among the substitutes, while Ciaran Clark has been preferred to Shane Duffy in the centre of defence alongside John O'Shea.

Meanwhile, Manchester United target Zlatan Ibrahimovic is the star name for Sweden, but there is no place for Albin Ekdal, who is yet to reach full fitness after recovering from a deep cut to his back.

Republic of Ireland: Randolph; Coleman, O'Shea, Clark, Brady; McCarthy, Whelan, Hendrick; Hoolahan; Walters, Long

Sweden: Isaksson; Lustig, Granqvist, M. Olsson, Lindelof; Forsberg, S. Larsson, Kallstrom, Lewicki; Berg, Ibrahimovic
