Real Salt Lake have closed to within three points of San Jose Earthquakes at the top of the MLS Western Conference with a 3-0 win over Portland Timbers.
Alvaro Saborio opened the scoring after 60 minutes after heading home Kyle Beckerman's cross.
Saborio then got his head to Chris Wingert's cross just two minutes later to double the hosts' advantage.
Portland midfielder Diego Chara was shown the red card in the 74th minute after handling inside the area, which gave Saborio the opportunity to complete his hat-trick.
The Costa Rican found the bottom-right corner with his spot kick to seal the points.
