Player Ratings: Real Madrid 1-0 Atletico Madrid

Sports Mole takes a look at how each player performed as Real Madrid booked their spot in the Champions League semi-finals at the expense of Real Madrid.

Real Madrid advanced into the semi-finals of the Champions League with a 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid in the second leg of their quarter-final on Wednesday.

A goalless draw in the first leg left matters delicately poised at the Bernabeu, but it was Real Madrid that dominated proceedings for much of the contest.

Atletico were reduced to 10 men in the 76th minute when Arda Turan saw red and the hosts made use of their man advantage in the 88th minute, when Javier Hernandez converted from inside the box.

Here, Sports Mole takes a closer look at how each player performed in Madrid.

REAL MADRID

Goal

Iker Casillas: Would have expected a busier evening, but instead had just two fairly routine saves to make. Not needed for long spells, but the Spaniard was positive from crosses and the like. (6/10)

Defence

Dani Carvajal: Got forward on plenty of occasions throughout the match, but the right-back's delivery was not always the best. Had a really solid game defensively though. (7/10)

Pepe: Got himself involved in a couple of altercations, but remained strong at the heart of the defence and helped nullify Mario Mandzukic. Never looked flustered at the back. (7/10)

Raphael Varane: Recent performances meant that the Frenchman could not be dropped and he had another excellent night in Madrid. Strong and extremely composed in possession. (8/10)

Fabio Coentrao: Has not had too much football this season due to injuries and Marcelo's form, but the left-back was drafted in here and impressed with a tidy performance. (7/10)

Midfield

Toni Kroos: Not always as involved as Carlo Ancelotti might want him to be, but the German performs such an important unsung role. Kept the ball moving quickly in the middle of the park. (7/10)

Sergio Ramos: Drafted into central midfield due to Luka Modric's injury and the Spaniard looked at home in the middle. Was just everywhere making challenges and was also excellent in possession. (8/10)

Isco: Not too much going forward, but the Spaniard impressed in a deep-lying role. Was always prepared to work back, while he set up a couple of second-half chances for Hernandez. (7/10)

Attack

Cristiano Ronaldo: Not really his night in front of goal - missed a couple of excellent chances. However, the Portuguese was always dangerous and set up Hernandez with some excellent play late on. (7/10)

Javier Hernandez: Has been crying out for regular football this season and the Mexican made his point here. Missed some excellent chances, but proved the tie winner late on with a calm finish. (8/10)

James Rodriguez: Continues to grow with each passing match for the Spanish outfit. Was always prepared to take control of the ball and dictate the play in forward positions. (7/10)

Substitutes

Alvaro Arbeloa: Only given the four minutes of added time and the Spaniard, who slotted in at left-back, picked up a yellow card within moments of his introduction. (6/10)

Jese Rodriguez: Would have been disappointed not to start due to the players that were absent and the Spaniard was only introduced in the second minute of added time. (6/10)

Asier Illarramendi: The third of Ancelotti's quick-fire changes, the midfielder, who looks certain to leave the Bernabeu this summer, replaced Isco for the final two minutes. (6/10)

ATLETICO

Goal

Jan Oblak: Proved the hero for his team in the first leg and the young goalkeeper had another excellent game at the Bernabeu. Made a host of top-drawer saves and was strong from high balls. (8/10)

Defence

Juanfran: Usually such a threat in the final third, but the Spaniard did not have many opportunities to venture forward. Did not do much wrong, but has had better games for Atletico. (6/10)

Diego Godin: Once again a tower of strength at the heart of the defence. Made a number of crucial clearances throughout the match and did not deserve to be on the losing side. (7/10)

Miranda: Difficult to be too critical of the Atletico defence, which was impressive for long spells. Found Hernandez difficult to contain, but like Godin, he made a number of good clearances. (7/10)

Jesus Gamez: Given the nod ahead of Guilherme Siqueira, but the Spaniard did not have many opportunities to show his potent long throw. Tested Casillas from distance in the first half. (6/10)

Midfield

Tiago: Given a spot in midfield due to his ability in possession, but the Portuguese just did not see enough of the ball at the Bernabeu. Was replaced by Jose Gimenez late on. (6/10)

Koke: Always prepared to take control of possession in tight areas, while he tested Casillas with a clever header in the second period. Once again one of his team's better performers. (7/10)

Saul Niguez: Given the nod in midfield ahead of Gabi, but the youngster presented Ronaldo with a wonderful chance late in the first half and was substituted at the break. (6/10)

Attack

Arda Turan: Worked extremely hard in the first period, but was always likely to boil over. Showed poor discipline to pick up a second yellow card for a rash challenge on Ramos late on. (6/10)

Mario Mandzukic: Was a doubt entering the match due to an ankle problem, but the Croatian was passed fit. In truth, he found it really difficult to make his mark against a strong defence. (6/10)

Antoine Griezmann: Did not have his best night, but lacked service in forward positions. Came as a real surprise when he was replaced by Raul Garcia after just 65 minutes of action. (6/10)

Substitutes

Gabi: Brought more control to the middle of the park, but needed a little bit more from those around him. Will have been disappointed not to have started in Madrid. (6/10)

Raul Garcia: Replaced Griezmann for the final 25 minutes, but the Spaniard's only major contribution was a really poor challenge on Varane, which brought a yellow card. (6/10)

Jose Gimenez: Replaced Tiago for the final five minutes, but just two minutes after entering, Real Madrid had the ball in the back of the net through Hernandez. (6/10)
