Yoni Buyens inspires Charlton Athletic to 3-2 win over Reading

Buyens double downs Reading

Yoni Buyens scored twice to help Charlton Athletic beat Reading 3-2 at The Valley this afternoon.

The Addicks passed the ball around with confidence early on, and they almost found a sixth-minute breakthrough when Johann Berg Gudmundsson's shot flashed inches past the post.

Reading weren't put off though, and they forced the first save of the match shortly after, as Pavel Pogrebnyak's header was beaten away by Stephen Henderson.

However, the Russian striker found the net before the break as he collected a Jordan Obita pass, turned and fired the ball past the goalkeeper.

Charlton should have equalised shortly after the break as Tony Watt hit Morgan Fox's pass narrowly over the bar from close range, but their fast start to the second period paid dividends shortly after.

The referee awarded a penalty to the home side after Michael Hector handled the ball, and Buyens stepped up to slot the ball into the back of the net from the spot.

Charlton pushed hard for a second and they forced Adam Federici into a couple of routine saves from Watt and Gudmundssson.

However, he couldn't stop Buyens from giving his side the lead as he lashed the ball into the top corner from the middle of the box.

Substitute Simon Church then confirmed the win, as he tapped the ball into an empty net from Watt's low cross.

The game ended in more misery for Reading, as Danny Williams was sent off for a second yellow card with five minutes to go, but they pulled a goal back in injury time thanks to Pogrebnyak.
