Rangers thrash Alloa Athletic

Rangers put five past Alloa Athletic as they secure a comfortable win at Recreation Park in the Scottish Championship.

Rangers have cruised to an emphatic 5-1 win over Alloa Athletic at Recreation Park in the Scottish Championship to secure back-to-back wins at the start of the new season.

It took the visitors just four minutes to open the scoring as Nicky Law got forward early on, playing the ball in with a low cross for James Tavernier, who smashed the ball into the back of the net.

Alloa were back on level terms within a couple of minutes, though, as a high ball forward fell for Michael Chopra, leaving him to volley past Wes Foderingham.

However, Rangers were back ahead less than a minute after the restart, as Jason Holt was brought down in the box, allowing Martyn Waghorn to restore the Glasgow side's lead from the penalty spot.

Foderingham was kept busy for most of the first half by Alloa as they attempted to find a second quick equaliser, but he kept out a free kick before watching Geoff Mitchell miss the target.

Rangers finished the opening 45 minutes strongly though, and extended their lead further with just five minutes left in the first half, with Holt tapping in from a Lee Wallace through-ball to score his first competitive goal for the club.

It got worse for the home side before the half-time whistle though as Law curled the ball in for Kenny Miller on the cusp of half time, slotting in a fourth for Mark Warburton's side.

Tavernier was on the hunt for his second of the match at the start of the second half, turning inside the box before watching his finish fly straight into the hands of Andrew McNeil, before setting up Holt a couple of minutes later, only to watch the summer signing let the ball go behind.

Nathan Oduwa came off the bench for his Rangers debut in the final half hour, linking out with Tavernier before completing a string of step-overs in the Alloa box, only to blast his finish wide.

The substitute crossed the ball in for Tavernier with just over 10 minutes remaining as Rangers continued to look for the elusive fifth goal, but McNeil came off his line to gather the ball.

Alloa started to see a little more of the ball in the final few minutes, bidding to add a late consolation, but Chopra's ball in for Kyle McAusland was beyond the defender.

That miss allowed the visitors to quickly make their way back down the other end, finally adding their fifth after Oduwa beat two defenders before cutting back to Tavernier, who flicked it into the path of Miller for a simple tap in on the line.

Rangers had the ball in the back of the net twice more before full time, but Tavernier and Clark were both flagged offside as they desperately pressed for a sixth late on.

The victory puts Rangers at the top of the table in the Scottish second tier, while Alloa sit bottom, having lost both of their matches so far.
