Former Manchester United and Aston Villa striker Dwight Yorke has revealed that he was once racially abused on the football pitch.
The issue of racism has been under the spotlight recently after FIFA president Sepp Blatter's comments on the subject on Wednesday night.
Blatter said that any racism during a match can be settled by players with a handshake at the final whistle.
Yorke claims that the incident happened during Villa's FA Cup tie against Peterborough United at Villa Park in 1995.
"It takes a lot for me to get really upset in football," Yorke told The Sun. "People know I always liked to play the game with a smile on my face, but the time I was racially abused on the pitch I lost it.
"We were hammering Peterborough at Villa Park and this person made a racist remark to me and I couldn't believe it.
"That just went over the line. At the final whistle I went after him and there was an almighty scrum in the tunnel afterwards that had to be broken up."
A number of figures have called for Blatter to step down from his position following his comments.
