5 incidents which suggest discrimination is on the rise in football

Anti-racism campaigners unhappy with worrying developments.

Footage of Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah being abused by supporters during his side's Premier League draw at West Ham on Monday appears to be the latest in a worrying trend of discriminatory activity.

Here Press Association picks out five such moments from this season, which have convinced leading anti-racism campaigners to call for stadiums to be shut to combat the menace.

Tottenham fan banned

A Tottenham fan was fined and banned from football for four years after throwing a banana skin at Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang during the north London derby in December. A judge found there had been a racial motivation behind the incident.

Trouble at Millwall

Millwall vowed to shut a section of their ground in response to trouble which marred their FA Cup fourth round win over Everton. Television footage showed home supporters directing racial slurs towards away supporters during the match. The FA is currently investigating.

UEFA is investigating alleged anti-semitic chanting by Chelsea fans during their Europa League game against Vidi in Hungary in December. Meanwhile, Chelsea suspended four fans over alleged racial abuse of Raheem Sterling during a Premier League game against Liverpool four days earlier.

Pellegrini calls for ban

Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah was the victim of alleged Islamophobic abuse during his side's Premier League game at West Ham. Hammers boss Manuel Pellegrini called for the culprits to be banned after footage emerged showing taunts and expletives being directed at the Egyptian striker.

Bong targeted

Brighton boss Chris Hughton criticised West Brom fans for chants directed at Seagulls defender Gaetan Bong during his side's FA Cup run. Although not racist, Bong is believed to have been singled out due to historic allegations of racism he levelled at Baggies player Jay Rodriguez, which were ultimately unproven.
