Floccari missed a couple of early chances, as the striker fired wide from the left of the penalty area, before the Italian forced a good save from Simone Colombi in the Palermo goal.

Palermo almost opened the scoring through Aljaz Struna, who met an inviting cross from Oscar Hiljemark with a header, but his effort was comfortable for Sassuolo keeper Andrea Consigli.

The visitors took the lead on 35 minutes through Floccari, who picked up a pass from Francesco Magnanelli before firing a shot into the top right corner of the Palermo goal from outside the penalty box.

Sime Vrsaljko almost doubled Sassuolo's lead before half time, but his effort went narrowly wide.

After the break Floccari forced another save from Colombi, before Vrsaljko tried an effort from distance, but the shot went high and wide.

Franco Vazquez missed a number of opportunities to find an equaliser for the hosts, before Enzo Maresca forced a good save from Consigli with a strike from distance.

The visitors almost wrapped the victory up with a second goal, but Gregoire Defrel fired wide, before Alfred Duncan blazed over the bar.
