The Italian Players’ Association has confirmed that the opening weekend of the Serie A fixtures will not go ahead.
A strike looked a likely option after talks between the players' union and the clubs' union broke down after failing to come to an agreement.
The conflict comes after players were unhappy with the idea of having to leave their domestic clubs in the last year of their contracts.
The captains from all Serie A clubs signed a document stating that they would strike if an agreement was not made.
