Olimpia to pay compensation after suspending player receiving cancer treatment

Club punished for suspending player with cancer

Paruaguayan club Olimpia have been ordered to pay compensation to a player they suspended while he was receiving treatment for cancer.

Uruguayan defender Sebastian Ariosa was diagnosed with a chest tumour in May 2013 and his contract was suspended in December of that year until he was fit.

The club have been ordered by the Court of Arbitration for Sport to pay Ariosa "moral damage".

"Olimpia was in breach on all counts," a statement from world players' union Fifpro has said. "Its response was to stop paying and suspend Ariosa, while demanding that the player return to training in the midst of his treatment.

"This behaviour corresponds with the two requirements which the tribunal considered in order to grant moral damage; exceptionality and severity."

In January 2014, Ariosa, 30, cancelled his Olimpia contract for non-compliance two years before it was due to end. He has now recovered from his treatment and plays for Uruguayan club Defensor Sporting.
