Al Wasl appoint former Argentina international Gabriel Calderon

Al Wasl name former Argentina international Gabriel Calderon as the club's new manager.

Former Argentina international Gabriel Calderon has been named the new manager of Dubai-based club Al Wasl.

The 50-year-old, who played in the final of the 1990 World Cup, has replaced Jorginho following the Brazilian's recent sacking.

When asked about the appointment, Al Wasl chief executive Ashraf Ahmad Mohammad admitted that Calderon's previous experience of having coached in the Gulf was a key factor in the board's decision.

"He has experience in the region and has been around, this is not his first experience in the Gulf," he told reporters. "You need someone like this, it's better than bringing someone who hasn't got knowledge of the league, thinks it's weak and comes here and gets surprised."

Calderon is the 10th manager to take charge of Al Wasl in the last four years and he will follow in the footsteps of the likes of Diego Maradona, Bruno Metsu and Hector Cuper.
