Newcastle United midfielder Mehdi Abeid has joined Greek side Panathinaikos for an undisclosed fee.

The Algerian, who has won one cap for his country, made 21 appearances in all competitions during four years at St James' Park.

Abeid, 23, signed from Lens in 2011 and spent time on loan at Panathinaikos during the 2013-14 season.

He joins former Premier League footballers Michael Essien, Mladen Petric and Luke Steele at the club.
