Alessandro Del Piero nets in Sydney FC win

Second-half goals from Sasa Ognenovski and Alessandro Del Piero earn Sydney FC a 2-0 victory away at Newcastle Jets.

Sydney FC have moved up to third position in the A-League table after a 2-0 victory away at Newcastle Jets.

Sasa Ognenovski gave the visitors the advantage after 61 minutes before a penalty from Alessandro Del Piero sealed the three points for Sydney.

The first half was lacking in goalmouth action, but Del Piero was providing the main attacking threat for his side, creating opportunities for both Ranko Despotovic and Ognenovski.

Newcastle began the second half on the front foot, but it was Sydney who took the lead through Ognenovski, who headed home from a Del Piero delivery.

The play continued to revolve around the Juventus legend, and he doubled his side's advantage with 17 minutes remaining as Sydney made a significant move up the league table.

The 39-year-old was fouled in the penalty area by Taylor Regan before getting to his feet to send the goalkeeper the wrong way with the resulting spot kick to take his team to within three points of Western Sydney Wanderers.
