Middlesbrough close to Leadbitter deal

Middlesbrough are said to be close to signing midfielder Grant Leadbitter on a free transfer.

The 26-year-old was released by Ipswich Town earlier this month after failing to agree a new contract at Portman Road.

Barry Robson was the only player other than the club's forwards to score more than three goals for Boro this season and manager Tony Mowbray is keen to sign Leadbitter to help his midfield improve those figures next term, according to the Daily Star.

Leadbitter has scored five goals so far during 2012.
