Stam to play for Man United Legends

Former Dutch international Jaap Stam has agreed to play for the Manchester United Legends team when they take on their Real Madrid counterparts later this year.

Stam, who spent three years at Old Trafford until his departure to Lazio in 2001, has been joined by his fellow treble winners Teddy Sheringham and Nicky Butt, who have also signed on for the match in June.

The 40-year-old's countryman, Edwin van der Sar, has also confirmed that he will play in goal for Bryan Robson's team.

"I was lucky to enjoy an incredible career and finish on a high with Manchester United," Van der Sar told the club's official website. "Of course, I have missed playing football and I'm really looking forward to returning to Old Trafford.

"Nothing can replicate the feeling of competing in front of a home crowd against a quality opposition like Real Madrid and to do it for charity makes it more special. In my time at United, I visited some of the foundation's projects and I know the money raised from this game will really help to make a difference."

Dwight Yorke, Andy Cole, Denis Irwin, Lee Sharpe, Dion Dublin and Quinton Fortune also recently confirmed their intentions to play.
