Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick says that he still has a "big contribution" to make to the team after starting just five matches under Jose Mourinho.

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has alerted manager Jose Mourinho that he still has a "big contribution" to make to the team.

The 35-year-old has been used sparingly by Mourinho this season, having started just five games in all competitions.

There have been calls for Carrick to get more game time, though, with Ray Wilkins recently urging the Portuguese coach to play the midfielder against Arsenal this weekend.

United have won all of the games that Carrick has started, and the man himself is confident that he still has plenty to offer to the team.

"I've seen it before, many times, with players who've come through this club and come towards the end of their careers still being able to make such a big contribution," Carrick told Sky Sports News.

"It doesn't have to be every week, it doesn't have to be grabbing headlines every week but there's a contribution to be made and I've seen it many times in the time I've been here. Hopefully I've learned from that and I can give my contribution in some sort of way."

Mourinho's men have won just two of their last eight Premier League fixtures this season.
