Manchester United's Raphael Varane picks up injury on France international duty

Man Utd's Varane picks up injury on France duty

Manchester United defender Raphael Varane has picked up an injury whilst playing for France on international duty on Friday.

The 29-year-old started in central defence for Didier Deschamps's side alongside Jules Kounde and Lucas Hernandez, but was forced off just after the hour mark with what appeared to be a hamstring problem during the 2-1 defeat.

Varane was seen pulling up and clutching his left leg with his team winning 1-0 at that stage, before the defender was seen with his hamstring wrapped up on the sidelines following his substitution.

The news will be a concern to new United boss Erik ten Hag, with Varane suffering several injury issues during his debut Premier League campaign this season.

After signing for the Red Devils for around £35m from Real Madrid last summer, the Frenchman would go on to make only 22 league appearances for United over the past year, with Victor Lindelof regularly being required to deputise alongside Harry Maguire in United's defence.

One particular absence came over November and December last year, in which Varane missed six games due to a hamstring problem.

Ten Hag is reportedly interested in strengthening his defence as he continues to run the rule over his new side following his appointment, whilst Varane's fellow defenders Axel Tuanzebe and Eric Bailly look set to leave the club after the Dutchman reportedly told United to offload the duo this summer.
