Ruben Dias: Man City defender gives 'perfect' reasons why he has signed new long-term contract

Dias gives 'perfect' reasons why he has signed new long-term Man City contract

Manchester City have announced that Ruben Dias has committed his future to the club by signing a new four-year contract.

The defender’s new deal keeps him at the Etihad Stadium until the summer of 2029 and will see the Portugal international extend his stay at that club to nine years after signing from Benfica in 2020.

Since making the move to the blue side of Manchester, Dias has enjoyed a trophy-laden five-year spell under the tutelage of manager Pep Guardiola and has established himself as one of the best centre-backs in the world.

Dias was named the 2020-21 Premier League Player of the Season and the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year in his first campaign at Man City, in which he won the first of four Premier League titles.

The 28-year-old has lifted a total of 10 trophies with Man City and was a key cog in the Citizens machine that won a historic treble in 2022-23, including the club’s first-ever Champions League trophy.

Dias has made a total of 223 appearances across all competitions for Man City and the defender is now eyeing up more success and more silverware at a club that he now calls “home”.

Dias: “I couldn’t imagine playing anywhere else”

“I am incredibly happy today,” Dias told Man City’s official website after signing his new contract. “I’m so proud to represent this great club.

“City are where I want to be - at the top of the sport, competing for trophies. The club’s ambition aligns perfectly with mine and as a footballer there is nothing better than that.

“I love Manchester - it is my home now - and I love the Manchester City fans. Their support from day one has been absolutely unbelievable, and I appreciate them a lot.

“When I think about the trophies we have won and the way we have played our football during my time here, I couldn’t imagine playing anywhere else.

“My job now is to be the best I can be for the duration of this contract, so that I can play my part in helping us challenge for more silverware.

“I want to thank my teammates, Pep, Hugo, the coaching staff and everyone at the club. This is such a special place, and I am grateful every single day for the support I receive.

“Now the hard work begins, and I want to promise the fans that I will give everything to win more trophies and bring more success to City.”

Dias labelled the “ultimate professional” by Man City chief Viana

Director of Football Hugo Viana added: “As a club, we’re really excited that Ruben has signed a new contract and committed his long-term future to the club.

“His hard work, professionalism and sheer dedication are clear to all of us every single day, He is a leader in the dressing room and on the pitch. He is one of our captains, the players listen to him and Pep and the coaching staff love working with him. He is the ultimate professional.

“His performances over the past five years have been outstanding and he is a big reason why we have been so successful. Every time Ruben pulls on a City shirt, he gives his all for the badge and we are so happy to know he will be here for the next four years.”

Dias has been named as one of four players as part of a leadership group at Man City, along with club captain Bernardo Silva, Rodri and Erling Haaland, following the departures of Kevin De Bruyne and Kyle Walker earlier this summer.

The defender helped Man City keep a clean sheet in their statement 4-0 Premier League win at Wolverhampton Wanderers on the opening weekend of the new season and he is expected to feature for Guardiola’s side in Saturday lunchtime’s clash at home to Tottenham Hotspur.

Dias’s contract extension could soon be followed by another at Man City, as fellow defender Rico Lewis is reportedly set to put pen to paper on a new five-year deal to end speculation over a possible exit.
