Olympic organisers reduce the capacities of a number of football venues in a move to avoid the sight of empty seats at this summer's Games.

Organisers of this summer's Olympics have reduced a number of ground capacities in a move to avoid the sight of empty seats.

All football venues apart from Wembley Stadium will be affected, with thousands of unsold tickets being withdrawn, areas of seating closed off and covered by temporary banners.

Games organising chief Lord Coe has said that "just shy of 40,000" tickets have been sold for the women's match between Great Britain and New Zealand on Wednesday July 25 at the 72,500-seater Millennium Stadium.

Coe added that the decision to close the upper tiers of the Cardiff venue will ensure that the match is played in front of a more compact crowd, thus creating a better atmosphere.

Great Britain's men begin their football campaign against Senegal at Old Trafford on July 26.
