Liverpool transfer news: Premier League champions 'change stance' over future of defender

Liverpool have reportedly changed their stance regarding the future of defender Jarell Quansah.

While Arne Slot has won the Premier League trophy in his first season at Anfield, there will be notable incomings and outgoings during the summer transfer window.

The most alterations are expected to come in defence, Liverpool already known to be losing Trent Alexander-Arnold on a free transfer and the futures of several other players for that position up in the air.

As well as the likes of Joe Gomez and Andrew Robertson, Quansah is another player where a question mark over whether he stays at the Merseyside giants remains.

Earlier this week, it was claimed that Liverpool were of the opinion that the homegrown talent could leave on loan, but it is now alleged that a different stance has been taken.

What is Liverpool's Quansah position?

According to Sky Sport Deutschland journalist Florian Plettenberg, Liverpool are now open to cashing in on the 22-year-old.

Plettenburg adds that there is interest from both Premier League and Bundesliga clubs ahead of the market reopening in June.

Quansah has been merely a versatile backup member of the squad under Slot, making 13 starts and 12 substitute outings in all competitions.

Two of his four Premier League starts came in recent 3-1 and 3-2 defeats at Chelsea and Brighton & Hove Albion respectively.

He also played the full 90 minutes as Liverpool lost the EFL Cup final to Newcastle United in March, his impact in those three matches only adding to the doubts as to whether he will ever hold down a regular first-team spot.

The right time to sell?

With Caoimhin Kelleher expected to join Alexander-Arnold in leaving Anfield, a certain level of consideration must be given to how many homegrown players will be left in the senior ranks for 2025-26.

Quansah ticks a box in that regard and there is value in keeping him in the squad when he can provide backup at right-back as well as centre-back.

That said, Liverpool may ultimately feel that his valuation may not necessarily rise in the long term, and generating pure profit for an academy graduate would bolster their efforts in this summer's market.

As such, selling Quansah is not being ruled out at this stage, even with the player being on a contract until 2029.
