Bayern Munich 'failed in late bid to hijack Liverpool's Sepp van den Berg deal'

Bayern 'failed in late bid to sign Van den Berg'

Liverpool were reportedly required to fight off competition from Bayern Munich to complete the signing of Sepp van den Berg.

The Merseyside giants announced earlier this week that they had won the race for the 17-year-old, who is expected to spend the early stages of his Anfield career with the Under-23s.

However, it appears that Bayern tried to tempt Van den Berg into a switch to the Allianz Arena when the 17-year-old was undergoing a medical with Liverpool.

According to The Times, the German side attempted to make contact with the player's representatives while he was being assessed in the North-West of England.

Van den Berg - who made 15 first-team appearances for PEC Zwolle during the most recent campaign - has allegedly cost Liverpool in the region of £1.3m.
