Manchester United board 'unhappy with Rangnick comments on Liverpool defeat'

Man Utd board 'unhappy with Rangnick comments on Liverpool defeat'

Manchester United's board have been left unhappy by the comments made by interim boss Ralf Rangnick following the club's loss to Liverpool.

United were on the receiving end of another heavy defeat by their rivals on Tuesday evening, with goals from Luis Diaz, Sadio Mane, and a brace from Mohamed Salah, succumbing the Red Devils to a disappointing 4-0 loss.

That disappointment followed the 5-0 humiliation suffered in the previous meeting at Old Trafford back in October, and the defeats have led Rangnick to suggest that United are 'six years' behind the Merseyside club.

Speaking after Tuesday's match at Anfield, the former RB Leipzig boss said: "It's embarrassing, it's completely disappointing and also humiliating, but we've got to accept that they're six years ahead of us.

"When you compare that squad that Liverpool has with the one that Jurgen inherited when he came six years ago I think at the end of his first season they finished eighth.

"They had a point average of 1.6. This is roughly where we are right now with our current team so this team needs to be rebuilt. It's clear and a game like today showed that even in a very drastic way that this rebuild is necessary."

The 63-year-old's comments have not gone down well with the United hierarchy according to The Telegraph though, who are reporting that the board believe their rebuild can be much quicker than six years.

Meanwhile, Rangnick will move into a consultancy role with the club at the end of the season when his interim spell comes to an end, with Erik ten Hag confirmed as the new permanent manager in the summer.
