Leeds United closing in on Lille defender Gabriel Gudmundsson in £10.2m deal

Leeds land defender Gudmundsson with tenfold salary boost

Leeds United close in on Gabriel Gudmundsson signing from Lille for £10.2m. Swedish left-back set for big salary boost as he joins Premier League return under Daniel Farke.

According to L'Equipe, the 26-year-old has accepted terms and is expected to sign a long-term contract at Elland Road in the coming days, as the club continues to strengthen ahead of their Premier League return.

Gudmundsson, who joined Lille from Groningen in 2021, is set for a significant salary increase — rising from €400,000 (£340,000) per year in France to €4.5m (£3.85m) at Leeds. He is viewed as a reliable, dynamic full-back capable of fitting straight into Daniel Farke’s plans for the 2025-26 campaign.

Leeds beat competition to smart-value signing

The Whites appear to have moved quickly to secure Gudmundsson amid interest from elsewhere, taking advantage of his contract situation at Lille, which expires in 2026. The Ligue 1 side were keen to sell this summer rather than risk losing him on a free next year — especially after losing Jonathan David under similar circumstances.

Although Transfermarkt currently values the Swedish defender at just €7m (£6m), Leeds have agreed to pay €12m (£10.2m) — a figure that still represents a fair investment for a player entering his prime and offering valuable experience from Ligue 1 and European competition.

The move is also a profitable one for Lille, who signed Gudmundsson for €6m (£5.1m) in 2021 — but Leeds will feel they have landed a proven top-flight talent ready to make an impact in the Premier League.
