Roberto Carlos: 'Roy Hodgson didn't know much about football'

Roberto Carlos criticises Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson over their time at Inter Milan, claiming that the Englishman 'destroyed him'.

Former Brazil left-back Roberto Carlos has claimed that Roy Hodgson "destroyed him" during his time at Inter Milan.

Carlos spent one season with the Italian outfit between 1995 and 1996, scoring seven goals in 34 appearances under Hodgson.

However, it was at Real Madrid where Carlos truly made a name for himself, and the Brazilian has since claimed that the Crystal Palace manager nearly jeopardised his chances with the national team.

Speaking to Marca, Carlos said: "Roy Hodgson destroyed me. He made me play in the centre of midfield. I wasn't going to get a chance to play for Brazil like that and there was a Copa America in 1997.

"It's not that we got on badly, it's that he didn't know much about football. I spoke with [Inter chairman] Massimo Moratti and I asked him to leave.

"I went to Madrid for Fabio Capello, he was the most important coach in my life."

Carlos made 512 appearances for Los Blancos between 1996 and 2007, winning four La Liga titles and three Champions League trophies at the Bernabeu.
