Iceland qualify for Euro 2016 with goalless draw

Iceland qualify with goalless draw

Iceland have qualified for their first ever major tournament after an underwhelming 0-0 draw with Kazakhstan in Reykjavik sealed their place at Euro 2016 finals.

The home side came into the match knowing that a point would be enough to secure a spot in France next summer after the Netherlands slumped to a 3-0 defeat in Turkey earlier on Sunday.

Despite this, it was Kazakhstan who had the better of the early opportunities with Bauyrzhan Islamkhan firing wide from the edge of the box before Tanat Nuserbayev was denied an opener by a smart save from Hannes Halldorsson.

Iceland missed a good chance to go in front when Gylfi Sigurdsson shot wide before forcing Stas Pokatilov into a save moments later, and the Swansea man then had another shot blocked as his side began to take control of the game.

Pokatilov saved well from Jon Bodvarsson shortly after the restart and the winger then headed Johann Gudmundsson's cross wide as the hosts pressed for a breakthrough.

Iceland captain Aron Gunnarsson was sent off with a minute to go for a second bookable offence, but his side's job was already done as they drew for the first time in their qualifying campaign to progress.
