Hull City edge past Huddersfield Town

Hull City edge past Huddersfield with a 1-0 win to send themselves within four points of league leaders Cardiff City.

Hull City moved to within four points of Championship leaders Cardiff City with a narrow 1-0 win over Huddersfield Town this evening.

The visitors brought about the first save of the match in the sixth minute when Jay Simpson met a cross with a first-time effort that was straight at Alex Smithies.

Ahmed El Mohamady came close shortly afterwards when the ball broke to him, but the Egyptian midfielder sent his shot whistling just past the post.

James Vaughan tested David Stockdale in the Hull goal midway through the first half, but his curling effort from 25 yards out was well held by the keeper.

The breakthrough finally came just one minute after the restart when George Boyd latched onto Simpson's pass before sliding the ball past Smithies.

Huddersfield responded with a chance of their own when Jack Hunt whipped a dangerous cross into the box. Neil Danns rose highest to flick it goalwards, but Stockdale was equal to the effort.

Vaughan then came close to getting a spectacular equaliser when he met Oscar Gobern's header with a bicycle kick, but his acrobatic effort went just wide.

Hull should have doubled their lead with just over 20 minutes remaining when Boyd was left free in the area. The striker swung his left boot at the ball, but fired his shot straight at Smithies.

Huddersfield pushed for an equaliser late on but couldn't breach the Hull defence and were forced to settle for a narrow defeat.
