Defender Smith signs new Huddersfield deal

Huddersfield Town defender Tommy Smith has signed a new three-year contract with the Championship club.

The 23-year-old has made 43 appearances for the Terriers this season, earning an extension to a deal which was due to expire in the summer of 2016.

Smith joined Huddersfield from Manchester City three years ago and has since represented the Yorkshire side 70 times.

Huddersfield manager Chris Powell told the club's official website: "Tommy has established himself as an important member of our first-team squad and a regular starter both at right-back and also within a back three.

"He is still a relative novice in terms of professional experience in a tough division, but he has played a lot of Championship games in a short period of time since his debut, which is testament to his ability, fitness and development. Tommy deserves a lot of credit for that."

Huddersfield, who are 16th in the table, complete their season with a trip to relegated Blackpool on Sunday.
